Story

I was four years old and my father had been helping with some other parents during a working bee to erect some of the wooden play equipment down in the junior playground.
At the end of the day when they were clearing up he asked me to put my hand in the wet cement at the base of the sign. I remember I didn't want to put it in too far because I thought my hand would get stuck forever.

At some time in the first four years of the school, probably 1967-68, the school held a celebration gathering of some kind - possibly an end of year Christmas party, in a hall on the flat part of Tawa. I remember this, because Dad hired a band for the event, made up of some of my school friends and myself. The band was led by Paul Sarcich, who was then a resident of Linden.  There must have been a couple more, for the total number in the band that night was ten. I remember this figure well, because it was the very first time that the band had been paid to play anywhere, and at the end of the night, Dad ceremoniously handed over a $10 bill to Paul Sarcich, which was $1 for each of us.
